This program aims to improve worry management using Written Exposure Therapy (WET). When a situation makes people anxious, people’s normal reaction is to avoid the situation. However, in some situations, an avoidance reaction is triggered even though it is unlikely that something dangerous will happen. Research tells us that such avoidance is unhelpful in the long run and will actually maintain anxiety. Exposure involves confronting situations that trigger unrealistic fear as opposed to avoiding such situations. By facing these anxious situations repeatedly, anxiety begins to decrease. Exposure is part of an effective cognitive-behavioural therapy technique to manage anxiety. In this program, writing is used as the exposure method.
